Born and raised near Margate (England), Mark lives and works in Cardiff (Wales) after finishing a BA Hons Fine Art at The University of Derby and an MA Fine Art at UCE, Birmingham.
He works across a range of media incorporating sculpture, video, sound, installation and performance. The subjects for his work are drawn from the social and political culture he grew up in; an equal fascination with things he finds so great and so terrible about the world we live in. This often takes the form of a re-evaluation and re-interpretation of contemporary culture and history, provoking us to consider our contribution to the world we live in. His work aims to suggest a wider discourse around history, culture and belief systems, inviting reflection on our moral codes and desire and ability to impact upon and change the world we inhabit.
Projects/exhibitions include How Should I Live? (Maybe That's Not The Question), Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth (2011), Eat Me!, Postmasters Gallery, NYC (2010) Zündkerze, Matthew Bown Gallery, Berlin (2010), Union, The Usher Gallery, Lincoln (2010), We Have the Mirrors, We Have the Plans, Mostyn, Llandudno (2010), History of a Time to Come, Crate Project Space, Margate (2010), A Strangers Window, Nottingham Castle and Museum (2010), My Empire of Dirt, Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool (2009), Pura Vida, Hinterland, Nottingham, (2009), Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, The City Gallery, Leicester (2008), Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester (2007) and The Death of Peter Fechter, ICA, London (2007)
Residencies/fellowships include Standpoint Futures, Standpoint Gallery, London (2010), The Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Scotland (2009), Cove Park, Scotland (2008), the Arts Council of England's International Fellowship at Bunkier Sztuki, Krakow, Poland (2005), The Wheatley Fellowship at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (2005) and Romantic Detachment, PS1 (MoMA), New York (2004).
Mark is currently working on a public commission for Bristol City Council and a solo show at Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth, early in 2011 and was short-listed in to represent Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2011. He is represented by Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool. |
