In broad terms McCann's work invites a re-consideration of our relationship to the world around us - a questioning of how this world constitutes us as subjects and how we, in turn, give this world form. Recent work examines, in particular, to what extent our understandings of the grand themes of modernity, globalisation and urbanisation are actually shared and experienced in common.
In an age where we risk becoming desensitized by the speed we consume, absorb and deconstruct imagery, McCann's drawings and sculptures open up the possibilities of interpretation. This playfulness within her work creates an encoded language that distills our view of the both the past and the present visual landscape. Her experiences of wandering and her particular points of observations allow us to rethink the relationship between contemporary art and the media, allowing for the reconsideration of images as not indisputable but precarious, to be used as tools to foster multiple points of entry creating new and alternative narratives.
